Somatic Therapy is rooted in the study of neurophysiology, specifically the autonomic nervous system. It works with the fight, flight and freeze responses that we experience when faced with threat, or overwhelming circumstances. This modality safely navigates these responses towards a sense of resolution and calm.
Through verbal prompts and supportive touch, Somatic Therapy accesses the body’s innate wisdom and impulses to resolve incomplete self-protective responses. This allows for a resolution of past traumas, and the integration of these experiences can bring deeper self-awareness and compassion. Emotional states can be experienced in a safe and titrated container.
Attunement, informed consent and respect for boundaries are the cornerstones of this practice. The terrain of violence, grief and overwhelming experiences requires sensitivity. I empower clients to express their true needs in the therapeutic relationship.
The aim of Somatic Therapy is to bring more embodiment, empowerment and empathy for the self and others. It stimulates regions of the brain that support relating to, and building trust with others. This enhances a core feeling of belonging and safety.
